Jenny is a kindergarten teacher in Reston, Virginia. She is a traveler, interviewer and host (who wants more travelers)!
What is your Servas background? I learned about Servas from an article in the Washington Post travel section. The article was about traveling with children and how wonderful this organization was for doing travel with children. The family in the article had experienced Servas in Wales and, that is where were going in the summer. We were interviewed and had three very different but great stays in Wales. We also became hosts and have been travelers and hosts ever since, some as a family, and some solo.
How long you have been an interviewer? I became an interviewer about 18 years ago.
Where have you traveled? As well as Wales I have had Servas experiences in Japan, Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany, France, England, and the USA.
What is one great memory you have from Servas (as a traveler, host, or interviewer)? One great memory as a traveler was in Japan. We stayed with a delightful family in Kamakura, and our host, Misa, phoned the next hosts for us. Luckily she did as there had been a death in the family and our visit was no longer possible. Misa immediately offered us 2 more nights with them. We have become great friends and have visited Japan several more times and they have visited here several times too, and sent their 15 year-old daughter to us for a summer of intensive English.
What hobbies do you enjoy? My hobbies include reading, cooking, knitting, crocheting and teaching English to non-native speakers.
What is one of your favorite quotes? I don’t have a favorite quote, but I really do believe that laughter is the best medicine.
Why are you involved with Servas, and why do you think that Servas is important? I am involved in Servas for the pleasure it gives me to learn of and experience other cultures while also being able to share my traditions with others. Servas is a wonderful way for everyone to get to meet new people and to get to know different customs and ideas in a friendly, non-threatening environment.
