Bee Happy in Kenya!

We’re happy to share with you this inspiring project your fellow Servas members are starting in Kenya!

Ned and Sharyn Farrell have started The Bee Happy Company to help save honey bees and teach the craft to communities in Africa so they can build a sustainable, successful business in their village.

Bee Happy in Kenya will provide access to both funding and education so these good, hardworking people can acquire the proper equipment and training to fully utilize their natural honeybee resource. Together with their own human resources, they can develop growth-oriented businesses creating income, empowerment, needed products, and food.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

“We must ensure the participation of indigenous peoples – women and men – in decision-making at all levels. This includes discussions on accelerating action towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals and defining the post-2015 development agenda. “

    Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People (9 August) was first proclaimed by the General Assembly in December 1994, to be celebrated every year during the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995 – 2004).

In 2004, the Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade, from 2005 – 2014, with the theme of “A Decade for Action and Dignity.” The focus of this year’s International Day is “Indigenous peoples building alliances: Honouring treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements.”

For more information, please visit the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples’ website. We also invite you to read themessage of the Secretary-General for this day.

Yours Sincerely,

Sunshine and a Run in the Captial!

Amy and Reianna at the Women's Fitness Festival in Sacramento, CA

Amy and Reianna at the Women’s Fitness Festival in Sacramento, CA

With nearly 3000 participants, the Women’s Fitness Festival 5K in Sacramento, CA was a wonderful experience. Members of the U.S. Servas Staff drove down to Sacramento to run with other women devoted to supporting WEAVE, Inc. and their efforts in Sacramento County to help survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

It was a very sunny day, much hotter than we Humboldt County residents prefer,  but we survived!
Our next peace project will be supporting Friends of the Dunes, a non-profit in Humboldt County devoted to promoting the vitality and longevity of Humboldt’s coastal ecosystems.
Stay tuned!

June is right around the corner…it is time to get running!

As a non-profit organization U.S. Servas loves to support other non-profit organizations who are spreading peace and good vibes to the communities they support. One such organization is WEAVE, Inc. in Sacramento, California.

Established in 1978, WEAVE has been providing “an array of services to women, men and children in the greater Sacramento region who have experienced domestic violence or have been sexually assaulted. WEAVE also works as part of the Rescue & Restore Coalition to support victims of human trafficking.”  For more information about WEAVE and their services visit their website, http://www.weaveinc.org/home.

For our June Peace Project we will be running in the Women’s Fitness Festival in Sacramento, California on Sunday June 2, 2013.  The 5K run benefits WEAVE, Inc. and their efforts at helping those who have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Registration is now open!

If you are in the Sacramento area and would like to join us, you can register at http://www.womensfitnessfestival.com/.

We hope to see you there!
